Artificial Intelligence in Home Healthcare


Home care Schedule Optimization is a method of identifying the most effective way to assign shifts and responsibilities to caregivers, taking into consideration their availability, location and expertise. It is critical in home care to guarantee that clients receive high-quality care. This process helps to ensure that individuals receive appropriate care on time, while also making sure that caregivers can manage their workload. It also contributes to a better caregiver experience by minimizing travel time between different appointments. 

Travanleo data science/AI team has designed, developed and successfully implemented a machine learning system called “CareWiz™” to address the scheduling challenges faced in home health care for one of our clients based in Florida. 


Challenges Faced by Home Care Industry Schedulers 

Manual scheduling in the home care industry can indeed be a challenging and time-consuming task. It requires careful planning and coordination between different parties to ensure that the appropriate personnel are available at the right time. Assigning a caregiver to a shift manually takes around 10 minutes, which means that an office with 15 caregivers may spend around 2.5 to 3 hours daily assigning caregivers to their respective shifts. Unfortunately, this process is not foolproof and is prone to errors. These errors may lead to missed appointments, delayed service, or even worse, a failure to provide care to those who need it the most. 

The home care industry is also facing a new challenge due to skyrocketing fuel prices, which have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. This latest crisis is replacing COVID-19 as a major concern in the industry. As a result of the price hike, some home care agencies are being forced to increase wages, which is adding further pressure to a market that is already facing a caregiver shortage. This shortage, combined with inflation and high demand, is also contributing to caregiver attrition and burnout. 

Schedulers are pressured to ensure that clients are properly cared for in this challenging environment. They must navigate complex scheduling logistics while also ensuring that caregivers are supported and given the necessary resources to provide quality care. This can be a challenging task, especially given the current challenges faced by the home care industry. 

 What are the Best Solutions for Automating Home Care Scheduling? 

AI-driven solutions are becoming more and more beneficial for the healthcare sector, especially when it comes to arranging home care. This solution can assist in optimizing schedules so that clients and caregivers get benefits. AI-based scheduling programs can aid the home care industry by lowering human mistake rates, saving time and money, and increasing overall effectiveness. 

The process of scheduling home care is complicated and considers a variety of variables, including caregiver availability, travel time between clients and caregivers, and previous service experience. It may be simpler for home care offices to handle these chores effectively if this procedure is automated. 

A solution using Linear Programming or Genetic Algorithms is quite possible if we can treat it as a variant of the Nurse Scheduling problem (NSP) and the Vehicle Scheduling problem (VSP). These are well-known problems and have NP-hard complexity. The various factors affecting schedules can be defined as a mix of soft and hard constraints and variances can be minimized through combinatorial search or heuristic methods to find the optimum Caregiver and Client pairs.
